Payerne, Switzerland: Solar Impulse 2, the second single-seater solar aircraft of Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg designed to take up the challenge of the first round-the-world solar flight, without any fuel in 2015, is currently being tested at Payerne airfield. Today the team performed a speed test on the runway. This test is the second last before the maiden flight. Solar Impulse 2 test flights are due to take place from end of May/early June, followed by training flights of Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg over Switzerland. The attempt to make the first round-the-world solar-powered flight is scheduled to start in March 2015 from Gulf area. Solar Impulse will fly, in order, over the Arabian Sea, India, Burma, China, the Pacific Ocean, the United States, the Atlantic Ocean and Southern Europe or Northern Africa before closing the loop by returning to the departure point. «Quand le téléphone a sonné pour m’annoncer que j’étais choisie pour accompagner l’avion solaire autour de la planète, j’ai halluciné», se souvient Raphaëlle Nicolet, 31 ans. Après trois mois sans nouvelles à propos de sa candidature, la jeune avocate passionnée d’aviation ne croyait plus vraiment en ses chances de faire partie de l’aventure Solar Impulse. Et puis, tout s’est accéléré. Une fois l’annonce tombée, c’est sans hésiter qu’elle lâche tout pour prendre part, la semaine suivante, aux derniers préparatifs du projet à l’aérodrome de Payerne. Entourée d’une soixantaine d’autres employés, la Valaisanne s’envole ensuite le 14 février 2015 pour Abu Dhabi, capitale des Emirats Arabes Unis et point de départ officiel du périple. Au moment du premier décollage, la Montheysanne peine à retenir ses larmes. «Je me suis dit: «Ouah, il vole.
