Located in the northwest of the country close to Central Asia and as the largest province-level division of China and the 8th largest country subdivision in the world, Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region spans over 1.6 million square kilometres and has a population of 25.23 million inhabitants. According to the latest population census, about 46 percent of Xinjiang's population is ethnic Uighur, although not all of them are Muslim, and 40 percent is Han and the rest are Kazakh, Hui and other ethnic groups. Xinjiang suffered harsh years of terrorist attacks, mostly related to Islamist extremism, which began in 1992 and escalated between 2009 and 2014. The regional government refuses to provide data on the total victims caused by the attacks, but it is estimated that about a thousand people died and another 2,000 were injured between 1992 and 2017. The government's crackdown on extremism in the region over the years has curtailed the unrests but it has been mired in controversy in recent years with mounting criticism from the West of alleged human rights abuses. China has denied all allegations of human rights abuses, calling them the 'lie of the century'. EPA/WU HONG ATTENTION: This Image is part of a PHOTO SET
