Top EU officials agreed in principle to limit bankers' bonuses to one year's basic salary, in what they called 28 March 2013 the bloc's most far-reaching bank regulations yet. The move aims to prevent a repeat of the 2008 global financial crisis and bring the EU in line with new rules for the financial services sector known as Basel III. The bonus cap should discourage bankers from taking excessive risks for short-term gain, said Michael Noonan, finance minister of Ireland, which holds the bloc's rotating presidency.
